1. Take photos for a surrealist photo 2. Edit by cutting something out of one photo and putting it in another
Research
Surrealism was a 1917 art movement in which pictures had concepts that could range from whales in the sky, portraits of people with animal features, underwater cities, etc. That creativity and uniqueness is what defined surrealism and when such ideas are applied to photography, it allows those outlandish ideas to appear realistic and create a dream-like setting. Sometimes surreal photos don't have to be extreme because they can also have small but noticeable surreal elements within the photos.
I like these photos because of the simplicity involved with them. The first one is an inverted city skyline with a person falling. You can imagine the editing process wasn't anything too extreme so it creates the simple look of the photo. The second photo is a landscape photo of an island with a boat and a cat edited onto the island. The only extreme editing that is done to the photo is the large cat. These photos don't have too much added to it but you can tell what makes the photos surrealistic.
My New Photos
I took these pictures around Riverview Elementary in the evening. Some are landscape pictures of the mountains, the school building, playground equipment, and some portraits of myself and my brother. I tried to take pictures before sundown but I only got a few so I decided to work with the darker lighting. When taking pictures of the school building, I took them with only one point of perspective. The portrait photos are simple because I knew that the background won't matter because I would select the person of the portrait and place them over another photo.
My Edited Photos
I started my editing process with the mountain photo. I desaturated everything besides the trees to see what it would look like with green being the noticeable color. The photo of the building was another desaturated photo but I tested out different hues on the background trees. Instead of the leaves having a green hue, I changed it to have a brown color. With the desaturated elements combining with the warm colors, it creates a feeling of fall season because of the emphasis on the brown. For the final photo, I inserted the subjects of the portrait over a symmetrical background. The end result is a desaturated portrait with a surrealist background.
